About

What is Play With Space?

Basketball is a game of space. The best teams aren't necessarily the most talented — they're the ones who understand how to create it, use it, and deny it to the other team.

Play With Space is a coaching journal. It documents a season of youth basketball coaching with one central question: can you teach kids to see the game the way good players see it?

This isn't a "tips and tricks" blog. It's a working log — training sessions, game breakdowns, things that worked, things that didn't, and the ideas behind all of it. If you coach youth basketball, or if you're just curious about how people learn to play team sports, there's probably something here for you.

The concept

Space in basketball means more than just standing in the right spot. It means:

  • Reading where the defence is before you catch the ball
  • Moving to create passing angles, not just cutting for the sake of it
  • Understanding why some spots on the floor matter more than others
  • Making the game easier for your teammates by being in the right place

Most youth coaches teach plays. We're trying to teach the game.

Who writes this

A coach working with youth players who believes the most valuable thing you can give a kid in sport isn't a trophy — it's a framework for understanding the game that they can use for the rest of their life.
